I have the happiest dog in the world, who is ALWAYS smiling no matter what is going on. We'll be sitting on the couch doing nothing for hours but I'll look over and she'll always have a huge smile on her face.
Recently I moved to another home and my partner and her cat moved in (the dog has lived with cats before and gets along with them well). For the first 6 weeks, my dog was still smiling nonstop. Recently, she has stopped smiling completely unless we are on a walk. We take frequent and long walks, but whenever we are home she is moping, withdrawn, and sometimes even hiding in another room which is completely unlike her. I am wondering if she realized the new human and cat are here to stay which is why she became depressed, but it seems strange that she would be fine for 6 weeks and then suddenly have a change in temperament. We have lived in a few other living situations with other humans and dogs/cats but she hasn't acted like this before. Maybe she is jealous because more of my attention is focused on my partner?
I have been trying to make extra effort to spend one-on-one time with her, take her on walks, etc. but she just seems so depressed. It's such a stark contrast from how she normally acts.
Does this seem like depression or perhaps a warning sign of an illness? She went to the vet a couple months ago and was healthy. If it seems like depression, any recommendations for how to help her?
