About two and a half years ago, I picked up a kitten off the street when I was in college. She's a great cat and stayed with me at my apartment up until covid hit last March. Ever since then, she has been at my parent's house. I moved out of my parent's house last December and crashed on the couch at my friend's house in Memphis for about 5 months looking for work. I got a job a couple months ago and we finally just moved to a new place with my own room.
I'm now back at my parent's place this weekend to pick up some more of my stuff and my cat. Thing is, I know she's happy here with the other two cats and two dogs my parents have. She has her set routines and everything. Both of my two roommates have dogs who stay inside most of the time which is the opposite of what it's like at my parent's who let them out in the backyard the better part of the day.
When I bring her to Memphis, I'll be slowly introducing her to the dogs and I'm not sure how that'll go. One of the dogs is used to living with a cat but the other has never done it. I know my cat will be super stressed during that time being locked up in my room while I'm at work and hearing the dogs.
I just feel selfish for having her go through that just so she can be with me. It will be a whole big change for her and I'm not sure how I can get over this guilt at the moment. Does anyone have any advice on how to make this as smooth of a transition as possible?
