Good age of a cat for someone who never had a cat

Hey everyone. I am from Germany but I am studying in the Netherlands, and I have my own apartment over there. Once life returns to normal and University opens up again, I will stay there permanently (currently still in Germany). I have decided to get a cat for myself. I was with cats from my family members and I really love them, they are soothing, relaxing, fun to be with. Certainly a good companion.

I never had a cat, and I am not sure what the maximum age of a cat should be so that the cat can get accustomed to me quickly and without any problems. Are a few years of age fine? Or does it have to be a kitten?

I have no idea about the suitable age. I am thinking of getting a cat from either a Dutch or German Animal Shelter. Also, would it be better if the cat would be a male or a female?
