I’m 21 years old, in college and only a couple semesters from graduating. I want to get a pet as an emotional support animal but my mother has never let me get a furry animal ever.

Hey guys, I’m new here. I’m 21 years old and as of recently I’ve been living by myself at a rental house my parents own by myself and my girlfriend comes to stay at times. I have been having serious issues with my parents trying to be all too controlling over almost every aspect of my life but they definitely have their chill moments. I live alone and have some pretty bad anxiety, and my counselor believes I could definitely benefit from a furry friend. Only issue is that my mother will go ballistic. I’ve begged her as long as I can remember to get a pet and she wouldn’t let me get anything other than a fish. Her argument is that we’ve had 4 dogs, and she feels as though she’d be the one having to take care of it. I see her point however I was 6 when she helped me with my fish. She will then go into a crying tizzy stating she can’t handle one more animal passing away or living in a cage. If I got one it would not be living in her house so she would not have to care for it and as for passing away, I completely understand but my heart is ready for a new animal. I’m not sure what to do. I’m seriously considering something like a rat, hamster or even ferret. I’ve done quite a but if research on each. I have the time for them and can definitely afford it. What do I do?
