Our cat is a rescue, he was found outside at a young age (~6 months), famished, hurt, and sick.
Someone took him in, fed him and took care of him before putting him up for adoption.
We got him when he was about a year old, he's now a bit older than 5.
We used to live in an apartment on the 3rd floor, next to a very busy boulevard and no backyard so going out was not an option.
We just moved to a house with a small backyard, surrounded by other backyards (and it extends towards a small green area). The front is a way less busy road but still a road with cars going up to 60km/h.
He wants to go out (we moved in a week ago so it's too soon anyway) and we plan to let him out in a few weeks once he's 100% acclimated to the house because we know he'll be happier this way.
However, my wife and I are worried he'll get lost, or worse, hit by a car. We'd be devastated, he's like a son to us.
He's a bit shy but more importantly he's curious, I'm sure he'll wander around.
Any tips to help either avoid him doing stupid things or just ease our worries?
