My neighbor said it's a No Kill Shelter. I dropped off a stray cat there, and it turns out it's not a no-kill shelter.

My neighbor and I have been feeding a lot of stray cats. She (neighbor) has been taking a lot of stray kittens to a no-kill shelter that is ~ 3 hour driving distance away because the town we live has a horrible shelter with a high euthanasia rate.

Recently, a new stray cat showed up. She's skinny but very loving and she follows people around. She seemed about 2 yo or less. This time I decided to drive three hours (6 hours round trip) to the no-kill shelter.

The stray cat was doing OK, but once we got to the shelter, she started panicking really badly. She jumped all over the place and peed, climbed on other cages, wouldn't allow anyone to touch her. She was extremely scared and also aggressive and violent towards people.

Then when I confirmed with the shelter that it is indeed a no-kill shelter, they said No. When the stray cats have behavioral issues that cannot be mitigated in 5 days, they euthanize.

Then I started panicking. I asked them to give her back to me so I could take her back home. They declined. They cannot give her back to me until they do a microchip test on her and they have to sedate her first. This will be done in the next few days. If no improvement in her behavior is seen, they will euthanize her instead of allowing her to be adopted by rescue organizations or other individuals.

I demanded that they give her back to me, but they then called security to get me out.

My neighbor must have misunderstood that this is a no-kill shelter because she has only been taking kittens to that site, and the kittens usually don't have this type of issue as much as older cats.

I seriously don't know what to do, extremely angry and sad that this happened. I will call the shelter again in 2 days to find out the status. I can only hope that the stray cat will be like loving and friendly as she was just like yesterday, but I am not sure whether she will suddenly change after experiencing a trauma. I wish I knew what to do.
