Need advice on domesticating a young and friendly stray cat

So my husband and I moved into my in laws previous place. They had been feeding neighborhood cats for a few years now. It started with 3, and now we have 5 in total. Don't worry, we've started the process of spaying and neutering them.

There is one cat, Koneko, that I've become very close to. Seeing him is the highlight of my day. It looks like he's a little under a year old. He used to be very scared, and would run away as soon as he saw us. Slowly he got more comfortable, until one day he let me pet him. My heart melted, he immediately starting purring. We slowly started getting him more comfortable with us, and now he'll come by twice a day inside the house. He loves cuddles, and he plays with toys. Given his behavior, I felt comfortable enough introducing him to our budgies, and it went really well.

We really want to keep him as our cat, but he's lived his whole life outside. He likes being inside, but eventually he'll start meowing to go out. The most crucial advice I need is how to litter train him, as after that he can try staying a full day inside. And then, just general advice on how to get him used to an indoorsy life.
