Not allowed to take care of my guinea pigs

Hi reddit,

I'm 13 years old and have two guinea pigs. They live outside as guinea pigs smell quite bad, and everything was going fine for like a month, but then when my grandpa moved the den to somewhere else during the winter so the wind was blocked more, we saw a rat was lurking behind it. This caused everyone to freak out and from then on, I was never really allowed to touch them ever again. I want to clean their cage but I'm not allowed to as I may be slightly allergic to their fur. However it's not terrible as long as I don't pick them up so they're very close to me. I feel so bad since my grandpa is the one doing everything, and he does a great job, but from his old age he also sometimes forgets to clean their cage or give them food til i remind him. I also really want a cat or a dog and I want to prove that I am responsible enough. Sorry for the lengthy text, but advice would be great!

Thanks!
