Over 24 hours with foster kittens; will not come out of crate; should I be patient or is something wrong?

As title says, they have barely left their crate when I'm around. They ate their food and used the restroom, but haven't come out of their crate to explore it while me and my girlfriend are around.

Today, we are going to let them get hungry then put a food bowl to see if they're food motivated, but just nervous if something is wrong. I did pick them up the other day without realizing I shouldn't have (that was my mistake).

Any tips? First time fostering and want to make sure I set these kitters up for success. I know the socialization window is short and important for their life.
