Our daughter brought home a kitten. At first our older Bengal (13F) was fine, then she became recluse, barely came down to eat and using the litter box. We thought she was depressed. We tried feeding her, she would just lick the gravy and barely eat but drinks water. Hubby and daughter scheduled her to see a Vet yesterday., so we got there at 8:30 and was seen at 9am. Vet checked her, everything seem fine then the vet found a lump in her belly and advise us to get an X-ray and we ok’d it. Came back and it was a tumor. He said it’s been there awhile and our cat was very sick and suffering in silence and advise us that we bring her to another hospital for surgery that would cost us 5-7k or euthanized her that day. All these without learning if the lump is benign or malignant. We told the vet that we wanted to buy sometime to be with our Bengal, discuss it with our family and decide which route we wanted to take since we don’t have that kind of money for a surgery. I ask if he can prescribe some pain meds for her and he said sure I’ll prescribe her some morphine., i was dumbfounded as I never heard of vets used Morphine on cats before but who am to question that., he’s the professional and we trusted him. He proceeded to type something that looks like the office visit charges and excused himself. Came back with a small syringe of morphine. I ask what it’s for., “I asked for prescription and he said he will administer it on her since shots are faster so kshe won’t be in pain”. I told the dr. about our skepticism with vaccines on cats esp. with my cat’s status., she’s old and most probably weakened immune from being depressed,not eating properly for days and he said not to worry, that it’s safe and the only side effect would be a dilated pupil, euphoric state and that she would be sweet and calm. As a side note., our cat was fully awake and alert before we brought her in., she even drink water and used the litter before we left. She was meowing the whole time on our ride to the vet and while inside the Vet., yet after the shot she became quiet and I still. the Asst. assured me that some cats fall asleep from the drug, so we left (10am) The whole ride home she was quiet and we became worried. We got home.,took her out of the carrier and put her on the table., she was just laying there with her eyes dilated and won’t move. Then she got up and tried to walk but she was falling down and my daughter hold her., we thought she was just groggy from the medicine. So she brought her in her room., she went under the bed and seem to be like she wanted to sleep. By 11:30 our daughter yelled out for us to come up., she was convulsing and was having difficulty breathing. Her heart was beating so fast and she was twitching while her eyes and mouth was opened. Then her breathing slowed down and she seem to be having seizures. We we’re all crying while my husband was holding and trying to comfort her. My husband keep saying it’s just the meds., it will pass., she’ll be alright” while crying his eyeballs out., he knew something was wrong but he just doesn’t want to accept it. Then she stretched her body and let out her last breathe, her body went limp and we all lost it. She died at 12noon. We were all in shock. How can a wide awake and alert cat be dead hours after seeing a vet?
