I’m having trouble wrapping my head around this. I understand if somebody beats a human and keeps them chained, because that person would know they are being abused, because humans are extremely cognitive. But what about animals? Does a dog understand the filth and pain of them being chained and starved? Or is it just “survival” mode where it doesn’t care unlike a human? A dog has only 500 million neurons while a human has 16 billion neurons. I understand animals feel pain and happiness. But is it on the same level of humans? Do they know when they are being abused? If they don’t know the concept of them being abused, then why are there animals cruelty laws? Is it only because of pure emotion such as sadness and fear? What I’m saying is that animals such as dogs and cats only understand in the ‘now’ and do not recognize abuse. So why do animals cruelty laws exist?
