I recently adopted an abandoned cat from a rescue. She is a little russian blue kitten (Maia), not sure of age but the rescue said she’s 100% under a year old and she’s pretty small so i’m thinking surely it’s around the 6 month mark. Anyway, some history about her, she was abandoned at a rental properly and apparently the house was occupied by a couple - the man ended up going to jail for domestic abuse while the woman fled the property before this, leaving kitty all alone to fend for herself. Despite this she is a reasonably nice cat, she jumps up on us occasionally and will snuggle into our necks and such. But sometimes when we pick her up she will freak out, or even when we pat her sometimes she will freak out and try to bite. She recently got desexed 8 days ago and still has a little wound at the site but am unsure if this could be causing her any pain to act this way? Other than these things she seems pretty comfortable around the house, sleeps near us and even on her back/belly showing.
On the other hand we have a purebred maine coon that is 10 months old (Chester). He is a very gentle cat and is very sociable, he gets along with dogs and other cats. Though he is large weighing about 7-8kgs. I believe he has accepted this new cat and genuinely just wants to be friends at this point.
When we first got the new cat, the first two days the cats would hiss and each other if they got close, with Maia swiping at Chester. Other than this she would just ignore him as he watched her and sneakily followed her around the house. We did do period of separation but after a few days i didn’t think it was necessary as they seemed to just be co-existing. It’s only been 8 days of having them and they will sometimes sleep near each other with their guards down. At this point in time, Maia will just pot around the house doing her thing and Chester will just watch and occasionally try to follow her. He will sometimes try and get close and play with her, especially when she’s on the zoomies but she will end up swiping at him and he will get scared and back off. She isn’t hissing anymore which i think is a good sign? She will occasionally approach Chester too see what he is up to or even to say hello but then she almodt always ends up swiping at him? Causing him to get scared and look super sad.
We have been giving Chester a lot of love and attention which seems to help but he isn’t quite acting like his super fun and crazy self. He likes to play fetch but we haven’t had a fetch session with him since getting the new cat and he won’t even run for the toy.
Basically my question is, what is happening here between the two cats? Do you think they will ever get to the point wherre they are best friends? And is there something I should worry about? I don’t want Chester to loose his personality and really don’t want to rehome the other cat. I’m worried about Maia becoming too dominant and bullying Chester, especially when we’re not home. I know it has only respectively been a week but other forums say that it really only takes a few days for kittens to get along? Also is there anything i could do to help the process for both cats?
TIA (and apoligies in advance for long af post)
