About a little more than a month ago I adopted this beautiful 2 year old tortie cat from the shelter. Other than a little bit of anxiety and excessive vocalization, everything was great! I absolutely love her! However, I always felt a little short of breath around her but attributed it to my anxiety issues. I would also feel a little sick (runny nose, headache etc) and took some claritin which would help. However, a couple of days ago, I had a severe reaction, I'm talking all sinuses blocked, eyes burning, face swollen, chest tightness etc. After taking a zyrtec and a nap I felt much better. I got tested at the doctor today and turns out I am allergic to cats. While I can take allergy medications, I'm not sure if I can do this because I will need to spend a lot on them for the next 10-15 years at least. I'm just a little surprised since I was never allergic to my old roommate's cat. Also I do have a friend who lives a little far away (5 hour flight) who loves her and is willing to take her in. But I feel like this is morally incorrect. I am also worried about what my friends would say since they dont seem to be very on board with this decision of rehoming her.
