Please note this is about a hurt stray kitten. So if that is hard to read about, please don't read this. I need to write my experience because I am feeling very guilty about possibly doing the wrong thing.
Two days ago, I saw a cat with 3 kittens roaming about in our area. Early this morning I could hear a kitten meowing non-stop on the first floor and went up to see what was going on. There were actually 2 and one was bleeding and looked severly injured and could barely get up or meow. I was not sure if I should intervene right away so I called a couple of shelters and they told us we could bring it in. We first went to a local vet for first aid and she told us that it looked like a dog had bitten its neck. She told us it was in a critical state and may not make it. So we rushed it to one of the shelters and they took her in. I am now looking online at caring for abandoned kittens and they all say you need to observe to make sure the mother is really not coming back. Before going to the vet, I did see the cat I believe to be the mother once, but it did not do anything about this kitten but the other one is not there. We had to wait 3-4 hours for any of the vet clinics to open and this kitten was still there. We were not going up to that floor in order to let the mother return, and it seemed like in that time, it took the other one but did not come back for this. Now, that we are back from the shelter, I hear the mother meowing and I am worried that it is looking for the injured one and I have separated a kitten from its mother. I probably should have brought it back here after first aid but we were not confident about giving it the right care and I did not know then that it mattered for it to stay with its mother. I foolishly used a theory that I gathered from watching a documentary on wild cats that the mother may abandon the child if it looks like it won't make it. I thought the mom just took the healthy one and left. I have also read that really young kittens could die without their mother and I am not sure how old the kitten is or if the shelter has the experience to care for this kitten if it is unweaned. I don't know how to tell. The shelter has a policy of no contact once you bring an animal in as they care for it and give it up for adoption, so I can't really bring it back nor do I have the confidence to since it needs a lot of care and we have never had pets. I am worried that I am responsible for possibly killing a kitten. I really hope it survives though and is not traumatized and finds a nice home. Thanks for reading.
