Keeping outdoor cat close to the house

Hi reddit,

Cats have been a big part of my life ever since a was born. They were all treated as outdoor cats (and were fortunate enough to be 17-19 years old). They would always stay close to the family house.

After the last really hard goodbyes I am finally ready to look for a new addition to my life (looking at a female ragdoll).

I’m moving to a ground floor house in moderately big city. I’m not a fan of keeping the cat indoors all their life but summers gets hot so we want to have the yard door open and I really want to be cautious with letting her roam around freely (nearby neighbors, streets, school, other cats). I guess my question is how do I train her to not walk too far from home.

What I remember we did with the previous cats; we never fed them outside, stay social, cuddle and play with them close to the house and ‘enter the house together with them’ (when they come home you wouls walk inside with them basically).

Sorry, long post. I appreciate any help and thoughts reddit. Love you <3
