My cat likes to chew on Christmas trees. Any advice?

My cat, Sugar, who I am very closely bonded to, is 3 years old. With Christmas coming up I'll be putting my trees up soon, the problem is that Sugar thinks the trees are forbidden snaccs and then pukes up plastic bits of Christmas tree all over the house.

Things I have tried to get her to stop:

  • Yelling "NO" whenever she goes near it. It's not very effective.
  • Putting a baby gate around it. She finds a way through.
  • Putting netting around the bottom of the tree to block access to the apparently delicious plastic needles. She either pushes it aside or claws her way through it.
  • Spraying it with vinegar, which seems to help for the most part but not always.
  • Dangling toys in front of her face, but she thinks the tree is cooler.
  • Asking nicely.

Any advice on how I can deter her from eating my trees? I'm really worried that she's going to get seriously hurt one day, and I can't babysit her or the trees all the time. My house is quite cramped and there's no door I can close, and she's an indoor cat and it doesn't seem fair to lock her away in Cat Jail for two months. Help!
