Hey everybody,
I am needing some advice on how to deal with a situation with our resident cat (male, 1.6 years) and our new kitten (female, 4 months). So our resident cat is a very playful tabby and we wanted him to have a buddy for when my partner and I have long days. We adopted a rescue about three weeks ago and tried to keep them separate for the introduction. We live in a studio apartment so this meant keeping her in the bathroom while we were away and trying to keep the spatially distanced while we are home. The hissing stopped after about 3 days and they seemed fine with eachother. They would sleep and eat around eachother and she would even initiate play with him and him with her. Now, the thing is he seems to take the play too far. They will chase eachother around but then sometimes he will pin her down and she will scream. We break it up when this happens. I guess I'm just wondering what we should do. Should we let them figure it out? She does not seem scared of him and will even intiate a good cuddle with him. You can see my profile for pics of it! He does not seem aggressive with her, it really just seems like he is playing and taking it a bit too far. We have caught him grooming her and he even let her eat out of his bowl a few times when im too slow to catch her from running over (we feed them on seperate sides of the apartment). So yeah, I guess I would just like some advice as to what to do. Should we continue to keep them separate? There are places in our apartment where she can get to but he cant (under the couch, behind things, etc) and I just feel bad locking her in the bathroom. Or will they figure it out? To be clear he has never actually hurt her, no tuffs of hair, no blood.
I should add that we do play with them both until they are tired. Sometimes it is harder with the older one though because he is not always interested in the toys.
