We're going to put down my old dog. How can I best prepare myself?

Buddy is 15 years old, can't walk anymore, and cries most of the time. We have done everything we can for him. I'm out of town right now but when I get back we're putting him down.

We're going to bury his body under a new tree in the front yard.

I have never personally held one of my pets before as they died, but this is what I'm doing for this one. How can I prepare myself? Any tips?
