Cats drained water bowl after being home alone for two days

So to give more detail I have two cats. One is 3 years old and the other is 1 year old. I have an automatic food dispenser and one of those water dispensers that usually will last about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks before it needs to be filled back up. I went out of town for two nights and left them at home. I have a kitty cam, but it is set up close to the food, since I was more concerned about he food dispenser losing power or something.

The younger cat has recently developed a habit of putting his entire arm in the water dispenser and splashing water all over the floor. Usually enough to make a small puddle, but nothing I felt was too concerning (although it's pretty annoying at times).

Before I left, I filled the food and water dispensers up. While I was gone, I checked in to make sure they were both moving around and eating. When I came home, the water bowl was bone dry! No water on the floor, either. I don't know how long they had been without water, but I knew I had filled it up. I felt so horrible, but I filled it back up and they drank water for like 30 minutes. After that, they started playing and acting normal.

That happened yesterday. Today, I came home from work to find a huge puddle of water in front of the water dispenser and the thing was almost empty!! I just filled it up last night!

So has anyone else dealt with this? It's soaking into the carpet and I don't know how to keep him from doing this while I'm away. Obviously, they won't be home alone while I'm on vacation until I can sort this out, but will he do this forever? Is there a good solution to this?
