Cats refuse to eat 2 meals a day, they prefer grazing, but I can't let them do that anymore!

I have been free-feeding my 5 year old cats since I've owned them. They free feed dry and I'll have them split a 3oz can of wet food once a day.

My vet informed me that my cats need to lose a pound each, and to stop free feeding.

She told me to do set feeding times but it's not working. I've tried switching them to an all-wet diet for convenience, and according to their body weight and what they need to lose they need to eat 2 3oz cans a day each.

The issue is that when I put down their food in the morning they refuse to eat it all, they'll take a few bites and leave....they're grazers! They've never eaten an entire dish of food at once.

This is an issue because my vet tells me once they leave the food to pick it up and put it away or throw it away.....well my cats refuse to eat leftover food in the fridge so I must throw it away, which is SUPER wasteful. If I ignored what my vet said and just left it out for them my fatter male cat would eventually eat his dish AND my other cats dish....making him gain even more weight, which is bad.

This is turning into a nightmare for me. They just will not eat their food at their meal times. I've tried doing it with dry too thinking maybe they don't like the wet....no, they won't eat all of the dry in one sitting either.

I'm not about to portion my cats food into 3-4 meals a day, I'm not even home for that so I can't feed them in the middle of the day.

What do I do?!
