Hi, I just adopted a cat last week and I love him soooo much! He’s a 10 pound domestic shorthair, indoor cat.
The problem is I’m worried he’s not eating enough or I’m going to underfeed him and my beautiful kitty with his poofy coat will turn into one of those thin scraggly things.
Right now I’m trying to switch him to half dry half wet diet. I give him 1/4 cup of dry food (100 calories) in the morning (which he eats) and 1 whole can of Fancy Feast (3 oz, 125 calories) in the evening, which he leaves half of. So that’s about 160 calories.
I also tried giving him a Special Kitty can (5.5 oz) over the course of the day split into two meals and he only eats about 3/4 of a can (around 150 calories).
It confuses me that he only eats around 150-160 calories when I see people saying they feed their 10 pound cat 3 3oz cans a day + dry food to graze on and I’m like wtf?? Plus I know a 10 pound cat is supposed to eat around 200-300 calories a day right?
One more question: Will 1/4 cup of dry food a day kill him? I want to switch to a high quality wet food only diet as soon as I start making good money in a few years (law student). I want him to live 20+ years and he’s only 1 right now...I just hope eating dry food every day for the next few years won’t cause him any terrible damage :(
