Had a dog as a kid, apprehensive of getting a pet as an adult.

Hi all!

Between getting a raise, being more stable and after a therapists suggestion, I've been thinking about getting a pet. I'm 25 and in a stable and super supportive job (they'd let me work from home for a while to help a pet acclimatise). I've had doggos as a kid and always been an animal person. I've helped friends look after horses, house sat for cats, dogs, bunnies etc you name it, I've probably looked after it (my least favourite was a turantula).

I've been looking around various shelters, and I've seen some doggos that really feel special to me and very weirdly one cat, I'm so not a cat person, my partner is, but this 3 legged cat just loved me and I was taken for s ride on the love train. So adorable.

As I said my situation is such that I'm much more stable, financially, geographically and emotionally. My therapist said (assuming all other requirements are met in my life) it might be great for my anxiety and loneliness (my partner is away most of the week) to rescue dog or cat.

I have this sense of 'what if I can't take care of it' or 'what if I hate my new furry friend' for no reason. I love animals, been around them all my life. My dog as a teenager (up until I loved out after university) was basically my responsibility so I know I can do it and I love doing it. But I keep thinking this stuff and it's kind of stopping me from going to see anymore shelters.

I guess I'm asking when do you know of its the right time to adopt a pet? I have a real ache to bring back a doggo (or cat tbh) And so does my partner, and give it love and a forever home and take it on all the walks/adventures I already go on with my partner at the weekend, but (it could not my anxiety speaking) I'm over thinking the what ifs.

Any advice for knowing when it's the right time to bring a furry friend in to your life?
