So, long story short, I currently have four cats in an apartment that is about 400 square feet, one bedroom, one bathroom, joint kitchen-living room. It is absolutely too small for the cats, but luckily it is temporary; I'm currently working on relocating to a larger living space, but in the mean time, I'm having some issues with cat odor.
I realize that in such a tiny space with the amount of cats I have, there's probably not much I can do to completely eliminate it. Three are long-haired heavy shedders, so I'm vacuuming daily to stay on top of that. Their litter boxes are scooped regularly (one is an automatic litter box, one I scoop and immediately take the bag outside); I'm not having an issue with litter or poop/pee smell, but rather just a general musty smell of...well, animal.
I've been trying to keep windows open and my air conditioning unit on "fan" setting to circulate air. But still, the scent is pretty powerful. I came back from a week long vacation today and walking in made me very aware of it. I've had a few people recently tell me that my clothes smell like cat, too, which has made me weirdly anxious every time I'm getting dressed to go out now. I recently put doors on my closet, because my cats were getting into the closet and laying on my clothes; I'm hoping a good thorough washing of my entire closet and then putting the clothes back in will help, now that there are doors.
I also was recently looking into getting a HEPA air filter because I read it can really help eliminate cat odor. For those of you with them, do you think they work and are worth it? Should I invest in a fairly large one due to the amount of cats I have? Any brand recommendations?
I know they can be a bit pricey, so I just wanted to check in and see if they're worth it before I grab one!
