Hi all,
My girlfriend and I adopted a new cat a week and two days ago. She is about 7, very shy but super sweet. We brought her into our master bedroom/bathroom, and she came out during the first night to explore. Over last week, she got more and more confident but still shy. LOVES being pet though. She'll purr even if we're just laying near her. Friendly little thing.
Old cat (had her about 8 months, she's 1yr 9 months) has the rest of the apartment. She has always been attached to us, but attention to her usually comes on her terms. We've made sure to introduce the smell slowly to her, putting rags with the new cat's smell out, trying to feed her close to the door. they've snuck a few peeks at each other under the door. A hiss or two from the old cat, but nothing too serious.
Bought a pet gate Saturday. They've had some face to face interaction, and quite a few hisses from older cat. I'll give treats when she isn't hissing, and try to distract her with her toys, but if she sits and stares too long, it's usually a hiss. the new cat doesn't run away or anything, she just chills.
I guess my question is what should we be doing next? Should I switch the cats for a few hours, so the older cat gets more of her smell and the newer cat can explore the rest of the place (have done this once already). Will she eventually just stop hissing if we're diligent with the pet gate? Does anyone have any other tips that we should try?
Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
