This may be the wrong place to post this, but my boyfriend and I have been wanting to get a cat for a while now and have been apprehensive about getting one. The thought of getting a cat has been elevated by my therapist saying that it would be healthy for my mental health to get one. The issue that we run into is space and being worried that the cat won’t be happy.
Our bedroom, bathroom, and VERY large closet total to about 250 square feet. That he would have access to at all times.
The closet is a long hallway walk in, with a lot of vertical space. The bedroom is open with a couch, bed, and accessible counters and dressers. And the bathroom is just a standard large bathroom. All with plenty of spaces to hide and be alone when he would want.
If we got the cat it would mainly be limited to our space in the apartment with time out in the common area (about triple the size of our area) when we are out there to supervise. Another issue is my roommate has 2 small dogs that basically stay with her the whole time, so our cat would only be allowed in the common area when she is in the bedroom (where she spends most/all of her time) or not at home.
As I said I just want the cat to be happy if we get one and I’m worried he wouldn’t be. If we were to get him I would want to get some elevated platforms that fix to the top of the walls so he can walk around and have more space up there. As well as I was looking into taking him to the park on a harness so he could get some actual outside time and extra stimulus instead of just through the windows.
The cat we have been looking at for about a week is a very chill and laid back one year old male with low energy levels.
TLDR; looking into getting a cat, but we want him to be happy above all things. How much space is needed to provide a cat with the stimulus he needs to be happy and healthy?
