I've had a pet toad for about 7 years now. I got him after a unit we did in science class about taking care of various animals. At the time I was dissapointed because I wanted something cool, like a skink, but I named the little guy William and I've done my best to take care of him since.
Now I'm worried that there's something wrong with his legs. I got home from school a few days ago and he was in his terrarium on his back with his legs stuck out all the way. Except for one leg, which was sort of bent at a weird angle under him. I flipped him over and he sat there for a while blinking a lot. I know toads get dissoriented if theyre upside down so I guess he couldnt get himself upright. Well lo and behold, turns out my brother had texted me like 5 minutes earlier that the same thing happened that morning after I left to go to school. My brother had flipped him over and he'd just gotten on his back again somehow. Could his water dish be too high off the ground for him? It's maybe an inch tall but hes an American toad, so he's not that big, and he was right next to his water dish when I found him. I also thought that toads were supposed to be really good at hopping but he doesn't seem to do much hopping and whenever I see him going in and out of the water his usually climbs.
Today I checked on him. He's eaten none of the crickets I gave him (unless my brother or dad fed him as well). He was also half in his water dish with his back legs hanging out. I pushed him all the way in. Now a few hours later he's resting his arms on the rim and looking a bit pissed off. I don't want to touch him again; I ate an orange 20 minutes ago and my hands still smell like orange juice.
Is there anything wrong with him? I know theyre supposed to live about 10 years but I don't know how old he was when I got him. Should I lower his water dish or get him a shallower one? Is he disoriented from coming out of hibernation? Do toads get arthritis or anything like that? Could he have injured himself when he got flipped over? I'm so worried about the little guy. I just hope he's ok. Any advice from people who know more about toads and amphibians is appreciated.
