Keeping pets in college/ uni

I know that so many people are against having pets in college. I have been considering getting a pet for the longest time now. Here are some points that describe my situation:

- I have over 7 hours everyday free time ( it gets kind of lonely)

- I have the money to care for a pet

-I live in a pet friendly building

-I live in an apartment with 3 other roommates who i don't know/ are strangers

Getting a pet will not only help me get through rough times but it will also help me grow as a person. I was hoping someone can suggest an appropriate pet that is affectionate and is appropriate for my current situation. A pet that can be restricted in my room would be the best case scenario.

I understand that pets aren't the magic key to happiness. I also understand that everything worthwhile takes time and effort and I am willing to give all my attention to an animal. Please do not recommend Hermit crabs/snails/ frogs/ turtles/ anything that is as emotionless as a rock. Thank you.
