Hi there,
My wife and I just adopted an 8 week old German Shepherd Lab mix. He and his siblings were found in a box outside a grocery story at 6 weeks and then they spent 2 weeks at a foster home and then we picked him up 3 days ago at 8 weeks (a day after he was fixed and microchipped)
Our 3 days with him have been very up and down (like a puppy recently brought him usually is). Though I am concerned our experience is a little different than most.
Day 1 he was obsessed with us, wouldn’t leave my wife’s side. We read a few books from Cesar Millan and basically trained our new puppy (Bruno) the way Cesar says to. We have only introduced him to our living room (his crate is there as well). First day/night our only problem was he didn’t really love his crate (no problem at all, that’s expected). He cried through the night but we ignored it like Cesar (and others) say to.
Day 2 and day 3 were completely different. He’s already become very good at potty training. He actually absolutely loves his crate.
NOW the problem is it almost seems like he’s scared of us. He randomly cries, walks backwards, jumps in circles, and runs to his cage and cuddles up just stares at us. He also keeps itching his left ear ONLY when he does this little “phase”. Almost as if it’s just a nervous twitch rather than a true itch.
With all of this, he cries whenever we leave the room and neither of us are in his site.
Good news with this is his crate training at night has gone great. He only cries 3 times last night and all 3 times we waited until he stopped crying and then we took him outside to go to the bathroom and then back into his crate to sleep he went.
Any thoughts? We’re taking him to the vet tomorrow for a check up anyways so we will bring it up to them.
