We adopted a stray a year ago. He clearly misses being outside but our area is not safe for him to roam (coyotes). We tried leash training the first month but he didn’t trust us enough and it went very badly.
A year went by and he’s much more trusting and easy to handle now so I tried the leash again and it’s already going much better. He accepts the harness without much problems and will allow me to pick him up outside when it’s time to go home (though he will meow in protest).
But we are still figuring a few things out. He likes to dive under fences which can cause an issue when I have to pull the poor guy back with the leash.
The other problem is that he likes to hunt a lot. Butterflies, insects, birds, squirrels, you name it, he wants to stalk and attack. When he gets in hunting mode on the leash, he wants to dash at the animal, then hits the leash length and turns around and gets pissed/hisses/scratches at me.
Those of you who walk your cats, what do you do in these two situations?
