Species: Cat, Age: 9, Sex/Neuter status: F / Spayed, Breed: Tabby, Body weight: 17lbs, History: Healthy, Clinical signs: Difficulty passing urine/possible irritation Duration: Approx. 1 day
My cat had difficulty passing urine during a 12 hour period 2 days ago. She was squatting around the house as well as in the litter box but only a teaspoon of clear liquid came onto the floor. She has since been able to pee more regular.
My question is moreso about what is standard for a vet office to do in a case like this in regards what tests to run, etc.
When I brought her in and explained the symptoms they did a physical exam, and recommended x-ray, bloodwork, urinalysis, and I believe they also did sonogram. The urinalysis I had to wait a day for the results. Sonogram or x-ray showed inflamed bladder. Urinalysis showed bacteria causing UTI. She is now started on a 2 week antibiotic course.
Upon speaking with friends I was told that in cases like mine in most instances urinalysis by itself can find the cause. I was also told that sometimes vet offices may pile on additional tests as a way to make money. Based off of the scenario I described with my cat in regards to her symptoms wouldn't it have made more sense to right off the bat do urinalysis and wait a day for the results as most of the time that is the only test that is needed as long as she is not in pain?
