I adopted a 10 year old cat in August 2017. He’s the sweetest boy and I love him to bits. There’s just one problem and it’s with his litter box. He has a history of crystals and not using his box (he was adopted at 8 years old for a few months then returned). Now I’ve had him checked several times and he’s always been crystal and infection free. Even had ultra sounds done. Here’s the thing, he’ll use his litter box religiously for a month, like LOVES IT and will spend 5 minutes moving things around, and then he seems to get frustrated. He’ll meow around it, sniff it then run away. He will then pee somewhere in the bathroom. He seems to like a dirty litter box (that smells like pee) but too dirty is bad and too clean is also bad. I try to leave some pee crumbs there when I clean it and I have a 50/50 chance of him being totally chill with it or hating it. I’m a loss because he flip flops so much, I’ve tried 3 types of boxes and 2 litters. He was doing AWESOME for 2 months with his new box and now we’re back to square one. Does anyone have any advice or been in similar situations?
