10 days ago, I was walking at night and found a cat that was meowing. It was -10 Celsius out (way too cold for a cat to be out) and the cat seemed distressed and was hanging around me. It had a collar with a bell but no tag.
I went up to the house that the cat was in front of and the cat followed me up. I knocked on the door, a lady answered and said it wasn't her cat but she was concerned about it too. The cat was trying to go inside her home.
I ended up taking the cat in. I took him to the vet to check for a microchip -- he didn't have one, and he appears to be unneutered.
I put in a Found Cat report with the local animal services. Nobody ever contacted them (or me).
I canvassed the area once, and didn't see any flyers or signs.
The cat has been fine in my apartment, although it seems bored and whiney. I've been keeping it indoors and I do live in a small apartment.
Today, the lady got in contact with me and told me she found the owner. She passed on the number, I called the lady and she said it was her cat, that she was busy working tomorrow but could pick him up after work. She seemed non-plussed. I pushed things back a day.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like the lady was negligent in having an outdoor cat in freezing temperature, and making minimal effort to find this cat. I'm feeling really guilty about returning the cat, although I'm not sure how optimal it's current situation is either.
I believe, according to my local animal services, that I could legally adopt this cat after the 10-day mark.
What would you pet owners/lovers recommend that I do?
