TLDR at bottom. I got a pair of kittens a week ago. I had the time, the money, the space, and Covid keeps the house boring so I thought I’d get one. My current adult 2yo cat is also lazy and not much of a lap cat, so I wanted something more affectionate that would hopefully energize the older one. Originally I wanted a pedigree, but settled for a pair of siblings at the local shelter.
My God, they aren’t awful and getting two makes things a LOT easier, but if I could have saw the future I wouldn’t have done it. They are litter box trained, but they poo (diarrhea) and pass gas ALL the time! Im using Hills Science diet kibble which they ate at the shelter and is pretty expensive, but they still smell awful.I’ve had them less than a week and they’re dewormed so Im hoping its nerves and they’ll get over it. They don’t clean themselves well either and are quite stinky, so I give them daily wash ups. They have dozens of toys and a large cat house, but they love playing with cords and running around under the couch or bed where I can’t reach them. While play fighting is normal, sometimes one will cry or growl and I wonder if they’re hurting each other. They like trying to pounce on the older cat, but she’s slowly getting use to them and putting them in their place. Im using Felliway multicat to help with them getting along.
Now for the good. They’re cute medium /long hair kittens, and the vet said they will be gorgeous as adults. The $2 scratching box I got them is their favorite and they leave my couch alone. There are under the couch/bed mats to keep them from under there and cord covers that are coming in the mail. The XXL pet crate I got them to put them in at night with all their essentials is the best investment I could have gotten. They are very affectionate and really look up to me, and I’ll have two extra companions to live with.
They won’t be going back to the shelter for anyone worried, but I think it’s always nice to share experiences. I really encourage people to consider adults just as much as kittens. Getting a kitten is literally like having a 2 yo child. Getting an adult cat is like getting a teenager who does their own thing but still loves and depends on you. I also recommend getting a puppy or kitten Before having a real kid, they are extremely similar in nature and work, and a real test of your patience.
TLDR: Kittens are cute, but it’s like I have a 2yo child. So much stinkiness, poo, and gas! My 2yo adult is the most behaved cat on the planet compared to these fur balls. They are staying, and I adore them, but I sure wasn’t expecting this. Consider a mellow adult cat over kittens, if you don’t want something you’re going to have to chase 24/7.
