For context, we have three cats and a dog. I got Nala (cat) around 6-7 years ago as a kitten. Probably about 6 months later, I got Ollie (cat) who was the same age as Nala. They were never friends, but have lived together fine. Mostly ignoring, but sometimes swatting or hissing. (Nala doesn't really care for any other animals and would get mad if Ollie tried to play.) 2 years ago, we adopted Zoey (dog). Zoey mostly ignores the cats, is scared of Ollie, but does want to step in if they start hissing/fighting. Then a year ago we adopted Pickles (cat). He seemed like the missing piece. He loves playing and cuddling with Ollie, will snuggle Zoey, and is the one Nala will let come the closest to snuggling with him.
While Nala and Ollie have never gotten along, within the past month he has gotten more aggressive with her. We have once found a few tuffs of Nala's hair, which appeared to be from a fight. Today, however, we walked in to find several tuffs of her hair and pee everywhere. We watched our security footage and we could tell Ollie pounced on her with her screaming. Normally if he won't leave her alone, we will lock him out of the room or lock him in a room so that they have space - but we weren't in the house at the time. He also has moments where he'll hiss at Pickles if he gets close to them, but we haven't witnessed a fight between them.
What should we be doing to help curb this? It's not like we brought him home and they can't live together, it's escalated recently. We will be moving soon and I'd like to create more "safe spaces" for Nala when we move (as right now there is really no cat spaces downstairs in our home). But that more solves a symptom vs addressing the problem. I really don't want to rehome either Ollie or Nala...so that would be an ultimate last resort and I don't even want to think about it right now. Any advice?
