I apologize for the wording of the title, but it was the best I could think of at the moment.
Anyways, I have a 10 month old male lab/st. Bernard mix. He is a very big dog (almost my height when on two legs- 5’3) and around 100lbs. That being said, he is extremely intimidating to people who don’t know him. However, he is the sweetest giant you will ever meet and has never been aggressive towards another animal.
The problem is that when he sees a new dog, such as when someone is walking their dog in the neighborhood, he scruffs up, growls, and tries to jolt at them. Luckily, I’m strong enough to hold him back, and generally he listens to my commands of sitting and staying. There was only one time he was not on a leash and did exactly that, but actually ran up to the dog. Immediately he started playing with the strange dog.
While he has never made aggressive contact with another dog, I still feel like a failure as a dog owner not being able to curb this behavior, and do not want him to ever act on his aggression. So, are there any tips anyone could offer about how to go about this? How to train him to not start off with aggression? Thanks!
