Pup in question is roughly 10 yrs old, lab and greyhound mix.
Over the last few months, he has steadily been developing a hacking...thing, and licking like crazy, and I’m worried there might be an underlying health issue causing it?
When I say hacking: it’s a loud, dry-heaving kind of noise. Usually followed by a gruff little cough. I can’t seem to pinpoint a specific trigger for it; it happens throughout the day at different times in different settings. Occurs 3-5 times a day, maybe.
Licking: he’s been zealously licking everything— himself, furniture, you name it. But also, when he isn’t licking he’s almost constantly smacking his lips or licking his lips— almost as though you’d think he has a dry mouth, no matter how much water he drinks.
Energy levels may have dipped a bit? It’s honestly hard to tell because he’s always been more of a cuddler than anything. Appetite seems the same. No dietary changes. Waste looks normal.
Thanks in advance. Really just need some insight on if I should be worried or not.
—- also, I should mention; I don’t know when he was last at the vet. Maybe 4-5 years ago, if I had to guess. That is not MY choice, trust me. My boyfriend adopted this dog long before I was in the picture, so everything for him is in his name. I’ve been trying to get him to finally make time to go to the vet (just in general), but he seems to think it isn’t a big deal.
