Hi!
I just moved away from my family for the first time for college (8hrs away from my entire support group) and it has taken a MASSIVE toll on my mental health (I was already diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD prior to this). I am seeing all the progress I’ve made over the years on overcoming these problems reserve rapidly, which I honestly can’t afford.
I’ve already made an appointment with a licensed therapist at my school (they have a very nice and extensive mental health department where all the staff are licensed) to talk about what’s happening. However, I was thinking maybe later in this semester adopting an ESA cat, ideally an older cat that’s pretty affectionate (I have a very old senior cat at home who’s 20 years old so I know how to care for them and a cat similar in affectionate and calm temperament would be nice).
My plan with an ESA cat is just to be able to have them live with me in my apartment since most housing in the area is not pet friendly (including my current apartment).
I just want some input on getting through this process and how your experience adopting an ESA was and any tips I might need and appreciate.
Thank you very much for reading this much.
Edit: I should mention, I’ve brought up me adopting to both my family and my boyfriend. They’re both on board with whatever helps support me in a positive manner, my boyfriend is allergic to cats but is getting shots to help ease his allergies around them.
