Help with cats! I tried everything!

I’ve had my two boys for 4 years. One is 6 years old and the other is 3. I’ve fostered cars before and even though they don’t usually like it, after a few weeks they can usually at least coexist. A few months ago a stray started coming to our garage and I fell in love and wanted to help. So I took him to the vet, got his shots and got him fixed and everything is good with him. So initially it was going to be a foster situation but I really got attached to the new little one (he’s less than a year old but the vet couldn’t pin it anymore) and now I want to adopt him.

The issue is that my two boys and him are just not getting along. At all. I’ve done all the usual steps, keeping them separated at first, having them get the smell of each other, eating right behind the door etc, even letting them see each other from behind the gate. But any time there’s any contact between them it’s an all out war. And it just doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I’m desperate! What do I do? Do I just need to come to terms with finding another family for the little one?
