I have a 7 month old kitten who is my entire world. I moved in with my mom, older brother and his girlfriend following an accident that had me out of work for the better part of 7 months, so I couldn't afford my rent anymore. I have some rules for taking care of my cat that my brother and his girlfriend find "inconvenient." These rules include leaving plastic bags on the floor, not bringing in plants without checking if they're cat safe, not noticing not picking her up by the scruff of her neck (they always do it wrong!), purposely letting her in the basement, hitting her, etc. Their kids are also VERY rough with her and not observant, and have let her out many times. They've also locked her in rooms or closets for hours at a time without noticing. I have expressed my discomfort with how they treat her many times.
Anyway, I found out that, unfortunately, my grandmother is terminally ill and she is going to die soon. We cannot afford the 24/7 care she needs, and I know she will be more comfortable with us there, so my mother and I need to go out of state to take care of her for however long we have to. I can't get anybody else to take care of our pets while we're gone, but I'm afraid to leave my cat with him and his girlfriend. I have had a serious talk with them about how I expect her to be taken care of while I'm gone, but if they do all of this under my nose, how is she going to be treated when I'm gone? I don't know what to do.
