Introducing New Cat to Dog

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are working on introducing her cat to my dog (shepherd mix) and are looking for some advice. My dog has lived with us for years now. He’s an 8-ish year old shepherd mix. He’s genuinely a really chill dog, but I don’t know how he is with other animals. He really isn’t around them too much.

We recently decided to take in my girlfriend’s cat, who was living with her parents. We currently have the cat gated off in a spare room, in hopes of letting the two animals become familiar with each other before moving the cat into the rest of the house. It’s been a bit over a month, and I’m really unsure of what the next steps are.

Neither pet has been aggressive, necessarily. At least, not constantly. There are occasional outburst by one or the other (occasional being about once every week or two). That being said, I’m not too sure how to go about the next step.

One thought I had was getting a muzzle for my dog to introduce them, as this would lower the risk considerably. He’s never worn a muzzle before though, so I’m not sure if this is a good idea.

Any advice would be well appreciated! Sorry if this is covered frequently. I checked the sub FAQs and didn’t see anything about this.
