My dog doesn’t eat unless I sit near him.

He really doesn’t even touch his food unless I sit here and I kinda pump him with “Good boy!!” or some pats. A couple of days ago I tried leaving his food there and walk away and he didn’t eat the whole day. I don’t think that’s okay, but even if I hear his stomach rumble, he doesn’t approach food unless I stay there. Is this okay? How do I make him feel “safe” (??) enough to eat without my presence? I’m kinda preoccupied that, when I’ll go back to work, he wouldn’t eat... Also I find it obviously very cute, and it’s hard to me too not to keep him company while he eats.

Edit: he’s adopted from shelter, I’ve had him for one year. He’s almost 2 years old, a very very cute pit bull mix (I don’t really know what he’s mixed with and I don’t care). At the shelter they told us the previous owner kept him on a chain to make him aggressive so he could make him fight (shitty fucking human) - despite that, my dog is the most loving, people-adoring pet I’ve ever seen.
