Newly Adopted 1 y/o Cat Won't Stop Hissing At 5 m/o Kitten

Hello! Last week I adopted a 1 year old female cat that had kittens at a very young age. The foster mom assured me that she was very good with other cats and humans. She is extremely skiddish and runs away at fast movement, but LOVES to be pet. We gave her our bedroom to help acclimate her into the apartment away from our kitten, Wes. She has made great progress coming out of her shell, but is still very skiddish around my boyfriend and I.

Wes on the other hand is a ball of energy. I adopted him very young from the same foster program. His mother ran away very early into his weaning off stage. He has been the only cat since I adopted him.

We left both cats separated and let them sniff each other under the door. We gave them separate litter boxes and shirts that smelt like the other cat. We now have been letting them see each other on supervised visits and it went as well as it could. Wes was not aggressive as there was no bushy tail, ears back, etc. The new cat was very nervous and hissed as expected.

However, Wes has an issue where he charges the new cat and chases her. I’m assuming this is an attempt at playing since he is not showing any signs of aggression. I’m not sure he knows how to play with other cats as he was mostly socialized with other humans. The new cat continues to hiss at him and bat him around when he comes close.

I’m not sure how to correct Wes’ behavior, or help calm down the new cat. I have been keeping them separated all day while we are at work and still try and have them see each other through the crack in the door.

Thank you!
