Hello,

I want to say that I am NOT asking for a diagnosis. I am only asking if I have reasonable grounds to consider this a possible mis-diagnosis and should spend the money to seek a second opinion/testing.

For 1 to 2 months (roughly sometime in July until 9/6/2020), my cat was experiencing occasional sneezing, runny nose, etc. These symptoms rapidly got worse, to where he was frequently sneezing up thick yellow mucus. Eventually, he went to a shelf in our house and would stay there 24/7 except if he needed food, water, or the litter box. He stopped eating much and lost weight. On 8/30/2020, he sneezed up yellow mucus with some blood in it. I freaked out and took him to the emergency vet. (I never should have let it get to that point, but I didn't realize how sick he was.)

They diagnosed him with a respiratory infection and gave him 7 days of 62.5mg Clavamox.

***I want to make it clear that prior to this sickness, he was 100% fine and was a happy, normal cat.***

The Clavamox mostly cleared all of his symptoms, and the last time I saw any mucus, sneezing, etc was on 9/5/2020. However, he still sounded somewhat congested when breathing on 9/6/2020. He took his last Clavamox on 9/6/2020. Also, he continued to stay on his shelf and still seemed kind of sick, so I took him to the vet on 9/7/2020. They ran routine bloodwork on him and said that he might still be sick because he needed a teeth cleaning and maybe a tooth pulled.

On 9/9/2020, (today) the vet called me and told me that he had high blood sugar on his bloodwork and therefore had diabetes, and that is why he has been sick. I freaked out and without thinking went to the vet, where they showed me how to inject insulin and sold it to me for $400.

Now that I have been home most of the day, I am starting to question how this diabetes just came out of nowhere. Again, he was a happy normal cat prior to the respiratory infection. My cat has also been a normal healthy weight his entire life. (I know other things cause diabetes, just saying the huge risk factor of obesity isn't there.)

I have Googled high blood sugar in cats, and I have found multiple articles saying that sickness/infection/stress is known to spike blood sugar in cats. Also, that possibly feeding before bloodwork can also spike blood sugar, and I fed him a lot before going to the vet that day.

I don't know if I am grasping at straws, or do I have reasonable grounds to believe this could be a mis-diagnosis and should seek a second opinion? In other words, is the information I found online saying that infection can spike a cats blood sugar correct? And if so, is it possible that his respiratory infection (and possible dental disease), along with feeding prior to going to the vet, spiked his blood sugar?

I appreciate any information!
