Retraining a good dog with a bad (evil) habit

So I recently inherited a really good dog from my husbands mother who can’t take care of her anymore. She is 5 years old and really well behaved and listens to commands well but there’s an issue.

Apparently my MIL’s ex taught the dog to chase and attack cats. AND..... we have 2 cats. So far we have secluded them from one another. The dog listens when we tell her to leave the room if the cats are roaming. They have both very recently been able to lay on the same bed with the cats on one side of a human and the dog on the other, not sure if the dog was aware of the cats presence but the cats have become more comfortable.

When she sees the cats she trembles and the cats growl. My husband thinks she is trembling because she really wants to attack them but knows she isn’t allowed to. I think she is trembling because she is scared of the growls.

Basically we want peace between the cats and the dog but I’m not sure if it is possible. She is a big dog so I’m not sure if she will ever relate to them and be as close to them as I would like.

Is it a lost cause and should I keep them separated or is there some way I can retrain the dog to see cats as friends??
