I moved in to this house 3 weeks ago. The day I arrived, I was informed that there was a flea problem. Surprise! Long story short, I want no part of this, and I'm out of here. I have found a new place to live and plan to move soon.
Here's the problem: the new place has an indoor cat. I do NOT want to bring fleas with me when I move, as you can fucking imagine. I need advice about how to move and make sure that no fleas come with me. Everything I have read online says that fleas want to be on animals, not people or objects, although that doesn't mean that it's impossible for them to hang out on people or objects. Stray eggs and larvae are obviously also a problem. Still, since
Background information:
- I do not own a pet
- My roommates' pets are not allowed in my room, and I have been washing my bedding and any clothing I wear around the house several times each week. I also regularly clean the floors in my room. (Despite this, I still find a flea in my room each day. It's unclear where they come from -- did it hop on me while I was downstairs? Was it hiding in my room? Who knows.)
- The whole house is hardwood or tile, only carpets are small area rugs. I don't have a rug in my room and am not taking one with me when I move.
- My mattress has an all-purpose cover on it that's meant to protect against bed bugs, presumably it also works against fleas. I've heard that fleas don't infest mattresses anyway? Please advise.
Here's my plan, please tell me what you think:
-
Thoroughly wash absolutely all bedding and clothing at the laundromats. Clothing will be transported there in bags, and then put into new bags when clean.
-
Vacuum the shit out of my car while clothes are washing.
-
Empty out dresser drawers the night before and spray flea killer in there to make sure that no eggs or larvae could possibly be hiding in there.
-
Wipe down all furniture with cleaning product (lysol? any recommendations here?) before bringing it into the new house.
5.. Purchase preventative flea treatments for new roommate's cat and make sure the cat has been treated before I move in (are these treatments effective right away!?) and will continue to be treated for several months after to make sure that if any flea possibly came with me, it cannot find a host.
tl;dr does anybody have experience moving out of a house with fleas and making sure no fleas come with you? how did you do it? not bringing a pet!
