Tips on helping a stray/abandoned cat acclimate to people?

I rented a house that came with an outdoor cat. This wasn't in the listing or anything but very quickly I noticed a cat residing in my back yard. It wasn't long before that cat was sneaking into my house to steal food and sleep in hidey places. After asking around with the neighbors, the cat has been here since the house was abandoned over 3 years ago. I'm getting the sense that the previous owners abandoned the cat when they moved.

Anyway, I've decided to rescue/adopt the little guy by live trapping him and getting some vet work done. I've been feeding him and socializing him with my other cat. That part is going great. As far as socializing with humans... let's just say that I have been around this cat every day for over half a year and it still won't let me pet him.

I feed him twice a day but I can't get more than 3 feet of him before it takes off. There's been a few times I've pet him while he was asleep in the yard or in my home but he was not a fan it. He hisses, swats and bites if you get your hands too close.

Here's where I'm at with it. I care about the little guy, but I don't want to go years with a cat that hides from me and won't let me touch him. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? I know this will take time and I'm willing to do the work. I'm just worried because I might have to move in three months... which would mean either I take this cat from his established outdoor home or I "abandon" him when I leave this place in the dead of winter.
