I adopted a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy, my first dog, on August 16th. 3-4 days later, I noticed that he started excessively scratching and whining while he scratched. He also had something in the back of his neck that looked sticky and flaky. On August 22nd, I brought him to the vet for the first time. Without saying the pet hospital’s name, I’ll say that it’s a large corporation. I only brought my puppy there because it’s literally a block away from my house so I liked the convenience. Anyways, we couldn’t enter the facility because of COVID and had to answer all of the normal pet visit questions via phone. They asked me if I had any issues or concerns, and I told them about his itching and whining. Long story short, they said that he was healthy and that the thing on his neck was just dermatitis. They gave me a monthly flea & tick preventative and said that they’d see me again next week. I didn’t give the preventative that day because I was trying to wait until the 25th as it’s easier to remember 25 than 22. On August 24th, I saw flea dirt on his head. I gave him the med after seeing it. A few hours later, I saw an adult flea crawling on his belly. As he scratched smaller fleas fell off of him, which I believe were killed by the med. He was very lethargic until we gave him a flea bath. We did all of the flea cleaning stuff that day and didn’t see any after. We told the hospital, and they said that they’d make note of it for his next visit. I was partially disappointed because it seemed like they didn’t check him for fleas during his appointment. I could’ve helped him sooner if they thoroughly checked him, or if I gave the med sooner. Fast-forward, on August 29th, they said that he was healthy. They dewormed him, and he pooped out tapeworms the next morning. They did a fecal exam and didn’t say anything about his poop being abnormal. Someone, whom my family knows, used to be a vet tech. They said that knowing that he had fleas, the vet should’ve prescribed him with tapeworm meds. On the 30th, the pet hospital didn’t answer their phone until the afternoon despite them being open at 8am. They said that they would ask the vet if they could prescribe him meds and that they would call back. They never called back, and we had to repeatedly check and see if they even asked the vet. This lasted until the late afternoon. The front desk worker said that the vet prescribed two meds for him, praziquantel and Drontal Plus. I knew that Drontal Plus already had praziquantel in it so I asked another vet for their opinion, and they said that they were unsure why he would need both. We told them that we only wanted to pick up the Drontal Plus, and the worker said that it would cost $60 and was ready to be picked up. They then told us that since the vet that was in that day never saw him, they wouldn’t give it to us without an appointment. Now for August 31st, the vet that saw him twice prescribed him with Drontal Plus and admitted that she should’ve prescribed some type of tapeworm med on August 29th. She told us that it would actually cost us $14. I don’t know if I wanna bring my puppy back here anymore because I feel like he’s not getting quality-care, but at the same time, they have all of his information, and we paid for a pet plan already. The fleas and tapeworms could’ve been treated sooner if they had been more thorough rather than doing quick 15 minute exams. I feel like they only care about getting him in and out. I also didn’t appreciate the miscommunication between the staff. If I cancel our pet plan and change hospitals, I’d go to a local pet hospital rather than a corporation, but this would be less convenient. What would you do?
