Will my family’s cats we’ve had from 6-9 years be sad if we give them away?

My family’s moving from our longtime house into an apartment because our landlord sadly passed away and the house is being sold. But, my mom doesn’t want to keep the three cats we’ve owned from around six to nine years considering we got them all at different times because of the cost of the pet deposit and because their “litter box smells bad”. Right now, we don’t really know who we can give them to and they might just have to go to a shelter, so I’m wondering: will they be sad? Can cats be sad like that. It makes me super sad but even more sad to know that these cats might just be dropped off one day at a random place they don’t know and eventually realize, we’re not coming back for them.
