Change of heart about the carrying crate?

Hey guys, so my girlfriends cat just got neutered earlier today.

Surgery went well and he's recovering fine. Like most cats though he doesn't love the crate. He doesn't go crazy or get mean but you can tell he isn't happy and meows alot.

Anyways before surgery the vets said that he had some blood on his paws from clawing at the metal crate door trying to get out. He must have been scared while inside the actual vet office pre surgery.

Heres the catch, my girlfriend just txted me a picture of him inside the crate. He willingly is sleeping in it as we speak.

Does anyone have an explanation for this? I'm assuming it's just to comfort himself by being in an enclosed area as I've had a couple cats pass and I know they do that when they are severely sick/hurt like most animals.

But I'm confused because you think he would relate it to the vets office and not want to go five feet from it. Especially considering his vet visit was just earlier today.
