11 lb Maine Coon, 7 years old, no prior health issues. Very affectionate, kind of meow-y, has stopped eating his food.
I switched his food (vet said he might be allergic so we switched to a duck and potato grain-free diet), and he seemed content. Now, he's not eating again, but will still eat cat treats. It's just the food he won't eat. He is still drinking water.
During all this, I left home for a week and my sister is taking care of him and his brother. Again, still drinking water and will eat treats, but has no interest in his dry food or the new wet food. He is still using the litterbox, but I'm worried that this is a result of my periodic absences over the past couple months. With COVID, I've been working remotely from home since March (so they've gotten pretty used to me being around despite the fact I was often gone for 12 hours a day during the work week since I work far from home). I've also been going to see my boyfriend every few weeks for a few days at a time. The cats have stayed at my apartment in the same environment, and he shows interest in being pet and loved, but none in eating his food. I'm having a difficult time telling if it's his food, my absence, or just a coincidence they started around the same time (especially since the food thing is still happening when I'm home all day every day for weeks at a time and not only when I'm gone). There seem to be no issues in his bathroom habits. Could it be something as simple as he just is being really picky about his food since he obviously is hungry and loves his treats but has shunned both recent types of food I've tried?
No puke or excess hairballs, no signs of constipation or anything like that.
I'm going crazy and I feel like the worst mom. I just want him to eat. I don't want to leave him, and I haven't even left that much but maybe the extremeness of my absence (instead of leaving every day and coming home every day after work, I'm home all day every day and leaving every few weeks for days at a time) is causing separation anxiety?
